For the opening of its 25th season on Sept. 12, Vocal Arts DC brought together two old friends and frequent collaborators.  Susan Graham, the beloved American mezzo-soprano, was greeted with thunderous applause when she walked onstage at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater.  At her side was Jake Heggie, serving double duty as accompanist and composer.  The centerpiece of the sold-out concert was the premiere of his Iconic Legacies: First Ladies at the Smithsonian, a song cycle written for Graham and the first-ever commission in the history of Vocal Arts DC…
